Earth

The central theme of hydrology is that water circulates throughout the Earth through different pathways and at different rates. Water changes its state of being several times throughout this continuous cycle, moving from ocean evaporation to cloud formation, precipitation, and subsequent runoff into lakes, rivers, or aquifers.

Groundwater hydrology, or hydrogeology, specifically considers quantifying groundwater flow and solute transport beneath the Earth surface. Researchers and engineers evaluate aquifers in terms of flow direction, pressure, depth, hydraulic conductivity, storativity, and transmissivity to secure drinking water supplies.

Surface water hydrology involves quantifying surface water flow, chemical transport, sediment transport, and erosion in river channels and other bodies. Understanding the complex interactions between rivers and aquifers remains a vital area of study for managing regional water resources effectively.

Observations of hydrologic processes enable scientists to make critical predictions regarding the future behavior of hydrological systems, water flow, and water quality. Statistical methods and computer models help engineers perform risk analyses to influence investment decisions in future infrastructure.
