Honda Shakes Up F1 Engine Leadership Ahead of Aston Martin Partnership

Honda has shaken up the leadership of its Formula 1 engine programme by replacing veteran project leader Tetsushi Kakuda with Yoichiro Fukao as the Japanese manufacturer looks to reverse its recent struggles on the grid.

The leadership change, which becomes effective on October 1, was announced by Honda Racing Corporation as part of what it describes as a planned transition to accelerate power unit development and transfer critical technical expertise to a new generation of engineers.

Yoichiro Fukao, who has been serving as the assistant large project leader and head of the software division, will step up to lead the programme as Honda attempts to recover from a difficult start to the brand-new 2026 engine regulatory era.

Honda has faced mounting performance and reliability hurdles under the current ruleset, prompting discussions with racing authorities and partner teams about potential development aid to help the manufacturer close the gap to competitors.

Targeting Crucial Upgrades and 2027 Success

The high-profile organizational shuffle comes as Honda seeks to establish a more robust development framework, ensuring that an overhauled and highly competitive power unit is ready for the upcoming 2027 season regulations.

Despite being granted additional development assistance earlier in the year to counter performance deficits, the manufacturer continues to face rigorous scrutiny from paddock figures and partner team stakeholders.

"Honda aims to establish a robust development framework and deliver a highly competitive PU by transitioning to the new structure at an early stage," the company stated regarding the strategic management shift.

With rival powertrain manufacturers open to further regulatory tweaks and discussions ongoing among team leadership, Honda's new technical management faces mounting pressure to deliver immediate competitive improvements on the track.
