ZIS-150 truck production officially began in late October 1947, marking a pivotal shift in Soviet automotive manufacturing as it replaced the aging ZIS-5 model on assembly lines.

Influenced heavily by American truck construction and wartime Lend-Lease technology like the International K-7 trucks, engineers at the Stalin Works crafted a vehicle featuring a modern chassis, a powerful engine, and an all-metal cab.

Over its production lifecycle, the vehicle underwent significant engineering revisions, including an uprated engine with light-alloy cylinder heads and a modernized braking system capable of towing trailers.

With millions of units produced across various global variants and international partner factories, the vehicle cemented its legacy as an industrial workhorse of the mid-20th century.

Mechanics and Global Production Legacy

ZIS-150 mechanics introduced several engineering milestones to Soviet commercial vehicle construction, including a five-speed manual transmission and air-operated brakes.

Despite its robust design and heavy-duty leaf spring suspension, early iterations faced technical challenges, notably with cardan shafts that frequently cracked under full loads and compromised compressed air systems.

International manufacturing expanded rapidly as Communist nations adopted the design, with factories in Romania producing the SR-101 and China manufacturing the Jiefang CA-10 under license.

The vehicle's ultimate evolution led into subsequent models like the ZIL-164, closing a monumental chapter in mid-century heavy transport and engineering history.
