Waymo Targets Tokyo Launch in 2027 for Robotaxi Service

Waymo is taking a major step toward establishing Asia's first commercial robotaxi service by announcing a formal partnership to bring fully autonomous rides to Tokyo in 2027. The upcoming Level 4 robotaxi service will be introduced subject to regulatory approval and thorough safety validation, starting with an initial fleet of approximately 100 autonomous vehicles. Under the partnership framework, users will be able to book rides through both the GO taxi app and the dedicated Waymo application. Nihon Kotsu will manage daily fleet operations while GO oversees broader integration with the local Japanese taxi industry network.
