Rivian R2 vehicles built between May 18 and August 27 are being recalled by the automaker after discovering an improperly torqued high-voltage battery busbar fastener. The safety campaign marks the second recall for the highly anticipated electric SUV since deliveries commenced earlier this year.
According to filings submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the defect could cause an intermittent or complete loss of electrical connection, potentially resulting in a sudden loss of motive power without prior warning. However, the company emphasized that the recall affects a very limited population of only 14 vehicles.

SubscribeThe manufacturing oversight was uncovered on September 17 when an operator identified an under-torqued bolt processed through an automated station. Rivian confirmed that the automated equipment has since been reprogrammed to reject improperly torqued fasteners to prevent future occurrences.
Fortunately, no accidents, injuries, or customer complaints associated with the loose fastener have been reported. Rivian noted that all impacted vehicles currently reside at its service centers, where technicians will inspect and repair connections or replace components free of charge.
Swift Action Taken Following Manufacturing Glitch
Rivian acted swiftly following a week-long internal investigation into the manufacturing records of its assembly plant. The prompt identification of the issue highlights rigorous quality control measures implemented for the new EV lineup.
The remedy involves thorough inspections by certified technicians to ensure that every high-voltage battery connection meets strict factory standards. Damaged components will be replaced immediately to guarantee long-term vehicle safety and reliability.
Customer notification letters are slated to be mailed out later this season, providing vehicle owners with complete instructions regarding the service process. Affected owners can also verify their Vehicle Identification Numbers directly through official safety portals.
Despite these early production hiccups, consumer demand and enthusiasm for the affordable electric SUV remain exceptionally strong across the automotive market. Rivian continues to prioritize transparency and swift remediation as it scales production for its latest generation of electric vehicles.
