Mercedes Benz Citan and its variants face discontinuation by 2026

Mercedes-Benz Citan and its related variants are officially set for discontinuation, marking a strategic shift in the German automaker's commercial and leisure vehicle portfolio. First launched in 2012 as a badge-engineered collaborative effort with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, the compact van filled a unique space as the smallest utility model in the Mercedes-Benz lineup.

Throughout its production run across two generations, the Citan bridged the gap between passenger comfort and light commercial utility. The vehicle evolved from its initial W415 iteration into the more advanced W420 platform sharing roots with the third-generation Renault Kangoo, while also spawning electric variants such as the eCitan and the passenger-focused EQT models.

Despite receiving notable accolades including a Platinum rating from Euro NCAP for its advanced active safety systems, company executives confirmed the decision to phase out the entire Citan, T-Class, eCitan, and EQT family. Industry analysts view this move as part of a broader rationalization strategy by Mercedes-Benz to streamline its commercial vehicle offerings and focus resources on core segments.

The discontinuation brings closure to an era where German engineering met French manufacturing at Renault's facility in Maubeuge, France. As production winds down, fleet operators and commercial markets will look toward other options within the brand's expansive commercial vehicle lineup, such as the larger Sprinter and mid-size Vito models.
