Kimi Raikkonen delivered a masterclass in tyre management and race strategy to claim a stunning victory for Lotus at the 2013 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Navigating tricky weather conditions that disrupted the weekend's schedule, the Finnish driver kept his cool to cross the finish line ahead of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Red Bull's reigning champion Sebastian Vettel.

"We had a very good car all weekend and the strategy worked out perfectly," said Raikkonen, reflecting on a tactical masterclass that saw him make fewer pit stops than his nearest competitors while maintaining blistering pace.

The race at the Albert Park circuit was immediately thrown into chaos at the start when pole-sitter Vettel maintained his lead, but teammate Mark Webber bogged down due to an ECU issue. This allowed Alonso and Felipe Massa to surge forward, setting the stage for a tense multi-team tactical battle throughout the afternoon.

As degradation hit the field on abrasive asphalt and changing track temperatures, Raikkonen's Lotus team executed a brilliant two-stop strategy. While others struggled with severe tyre wear on both the medium and super-soft compounds, Raikkonen maintained consistent lap times and ultimately sealed the win with the fastest lap of the race in the closing stages.

Fernando Alonso drove an aggressive and calculated race to secure second place for Ferrari, capitalizing on superior race pace after a chaotic qualifying session was split across two days due to heavy downpours. The Spanish driver fought his way through the field following a fierce battle with Mercedes and Red Bull.

"We pushed hard from the first lap to the very end, and second place is a great reward for the team's hard work," Alonso stated following the podium ceremony.

Sebastian Vettel, who started from pole position after edging out Webber in a damp qualifying session on Sunday morning, settled for third place. The Red Bull driver struggled to break away from the chasing pack as tyre degradation heavily influenced the race dynamics in the second half of the Grand Prix.

Rounding out the top positions, Felipe Massa finished fourth for Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton took fifth in his debut outing for Mercedes. The race ultimately marked a historic turning point in the turbo-hybrid era's early foundations, standing as the last time a non-Mercedes, Ferrari, or Red Bull team won a Grand Prix for years to come.
