Today, energy is recognized as a fundamental conserved quantity across all domains of physics, underlying both classical and quantum phenomena.

Theoretical advancements continued as physicists explored electromagnetic mass and cavity radiation. Henri Poincaré and Friedrich Hasenöhrl suggested direct proportionalities between electromagnetic energy and equivalent mass, though these early approaches still relied on the assumption of an luminiferous aether before special relativity redefined the field.

Emmy Noether's landmark 1918 theorem bridged abstract mathematics and physical reality by demonstrating that energy is conserved because the laws of physics do not distinguish between different moments of time. This symmetry-based understanding cemented energy as an essential pillar of theoretical physics.

Reflecting on this abstract principle during a 1961 lecture, Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman emphasized that conservation of energy is a mathematical principle stating that a certain numerical quantity does not change through the manifold changes nature undergoes, representing a profound constancy in the universe.
