Helmut Marko claps back at Christian Horner over controversial claims about Max Verstappen

Helmut Marko has firmly dismissed shocking allegations made by former Red Bull Formula 1 team principal Christian Horner regarding the recruitment of Max Verstappen. In his upcoming autobiography titled Drive, Horner claims that Marko initially opposed bringing Verstappen into the Red Bull setup, asserting that the driver's father, Jos Verstappen, had to push hard to finalize the deal. Marko has since hit back at the narrative, choosing to brush off the controversy while aligning himself with supportive commentary from former racing drivers.

"I'm ignoring it as much as possible. Ralf Schumacher handled it very well," Marko stated during an interview with Austrian media outlet OE24, pointing to Schumacher's defense on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast where the claims were branded an absolute lie. Schumacher noted that Marko had actually approached a young Verstappen years prior when he was just eleven and a half years old, establishing a much earlier connection than what Horner's book suggests.

Reflecting on how the partnership ultimately blossomed, Marko detailed how their paths converged again during the Formula 3 era, laying the groundwork for an unprecedented championship-winning run. "It worked out well the way it did," Marko explained. "Max was successful in karting back then, and we had no idea about that. Later in Formula 3, we would have grown closer again, and that’s how this unprecedented success story came about."

Furthermore, Marko turned the tables by accusing Horner of having his own doubts about promoting Verstappen to the main Red Bull seat back in 2016. According to Marko, the British boss felt the young phenom was too inexperienced ahead of his dramatic debut at the Spanish Grand Prix, where Verstappen went on to become Formula 1's youngest-ever race winner. This war of words highlights the deep fractures within the Red Bull leadership following a turbulent period of power struggles behind the scenes.

The public disagreement between the prominent figures highlights the strained dynamics that persisted within Red Bull during the latter stages of their tenure. Tensions behind closed doors escalated significantly following the passing of Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz, which triggered a fierce internal power struggle.

The corporate fallout ultimately culminated in dramatic fashion when Horner was removed from his long-standing leadership post shortly after the 2025 British Grand Prix. The high-profile exit effectively ended a two-decade reign at the helm of the championship-winning organization, reshaping the team's executive landscape.

Meanwhile, Marko also departed from his formal role with Red Bull at the conclusion of the 2025 season, closing out a legendary chapter in driver development. Despite their exits, old rivalries and contrasting accounts of historic paddock milestones continue to resurface as key personnel pen their memoirs.

As the fallout from these competing accounts reverberates through the Formula 1 community, the true timeline of Verstappen's legendary ascension remains a subject of intense debate among those who shaped modern motorsport history.
