Kulim District is a thriving district and town situated in the southeast of Kedah, Malaysia, bordering Penang. Positioned just 27 kilometers east of George Town, the district forms an integral part of the George Town Conurbation, which stands as Malaysia's second largest metropolitan area. Home to a population of approximately 354,000 residents as of 2025, Kulim spans an area of 765 square kilometers and maintains a vital geographic and economic connection to neighboring northern regional hubs.
The name of the district originates from the kulim tree, scientifically known as Scorodocarpus borneensis Becc., which historically grew in abundance throughout the area. Settlement in Kulim dates back to the mid-18th century, initially pioneered by Pattani Malay families and a Chinese artisan named Chin Ah Cheoh. The region experienced rapid growth during the mid-19th century following the discovery of rich tin ore deposits, attracting hundreds of Chinese miners to establish operations across various local settlements.
