Profile of the Achaemenid Empire and its historical expansion under Cyrus the Great

The Achaemenid Empire was an ancient Iranian empire founded by Cyrus the Great of the Achaemenid dynasty in 550 BC. At its peak, its territorial extent reached roughly 5.5 million square kilometres, establishing it as the largest empire of its time based in the Iranian plateau.

Stretching from the Balkans and Cyrenaica in the west to the Indus Valley in the east, the empire encompassed Anatolia, Cyprus, Mesopotamia, the Levant, and large parts of Central Asia. This vast political entity unified diverse cultures through centralized administration and military strength.

In 330 BC, amidst a military campaign led by Alexander the Great, the empire was conquered and annexed into the Macedonian Empire. Following Alexander's death, its territories transitioned into Hellenistic rule before local dynasties reclaimed the region.

Modern historians recognize the Achaemenid Empire for its centralized bureaucracy, multicultural policies, religious tolerance under Cyrus, and sophisticated infrastructure projects like the Royal Road and organized postal systems.

Rise and Expansion under Cyrus the Great

The historical rise of the empire began when Cyrus of Persis rose to power and successfully defeated Media, Lydia, and the Neo-Babylonian Empire. These conquests marked the establishment of a brand-new imperial polity across the ancient Near East.

Following victories against King Croesus of Lydia and the capture of Babylon in 539 BC, Cyrus cemented his rule by portraying himself as a restorer of divine order and traditional heritage. He famously permitted displaced populations, including the Jews, to return to their homelands.

Following the death of Cyrus in 530 BC, his son Cambyses II succeeded him and continued the expansion by subduing Egypt and establishing secure garrisons and strategic military trade routes across North Africa.

The complex succession events following Cambyses eventually brought Darius the Great to power, whose monumental inscriptions and administrative reforms further solidified the empire's vast territories and historical legacy.
