Jochen Rindt celebrates dramatic victory at 1970 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch

Jochen Rindt secured a dramatic victory at the 1970 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch after long-time leader Jack Brabham dramatically ran out of fuel on the final corner of the race.

"It was an incredible twist of fate that handed us the win today after a grueling battle on the track," reflected the team following the conclusion of the thrilling 80-lap motor race.

Brabham appeared poised to take a comfortable victory in his Brabham BT33 before his fuel ran dry just meters away from the checkered flag, allowing Rindt's Lotus 72 to sweep past and claim his third consecutive win of the season.

New Zealander Denny Hulme rounded out the podium by finishing in third place for McLaren, while veteran Australian driver Brabham managed to coast across the line to salvage second place and his final Formula One points.

The 1970 event at Brands Hatch also served as a historic milestone for the future of motorsport, featuring the maiden Formula One appearance of Brazilian driver Emerson Fittipaldi.

"Stepping onto the grid for my first world championship race alongside legends of the sport is a dream come true," said Fittipaldi after driving his older Lotus 49 to an impressive eighth-place finish.

While rising stars like Fittipaldi made their grand entry into the pinnacle of motorsport, the weekend also marked the final Formula One race appearance for American racing icon Dan Gurney.

The dramatic race weekend ultimately solidified Rindt's commanding position at the top of the Drivers" Championship standings as the 1970 season crossed its midpoint.
